Fleet Mission
Formed in 2402, Vanguard Squadron's primary mission has been one of deep-space exploration. Over the years it's role has evolved, expanding to include diplomacy, first contact, interdiction, colonization, tactical support, search and rescue, and intelligence-gathering.
Area of Operations
Vanguard Fleet operates primarily in the Alpha Quadrant, from the spinward side of Sol Sector (home to the Sol/Terran system and Federation headquarters) to the Bajoran Sector (home to the Bajoran system), and the nearby borders the Federation shares with the Cardassian Union, the Klingon Empire, and the Ferengi Alliance. Via the Bajoran Wormhole, Vanguard Fleet is also charged with maintaining the first stable Federation presence in the Gamma Quadrant as established by the Federation and Dominion co-signed Treaty of Bajor, patroling and exploring a region of space of over 30,000 light-years. |

Ha'tnuHome Planet: Fvillhaih Arylne
Description
The Ha'tnu are a sturdily-bodied people, average height about 1.6m. Their thick bodies are generally wide-hipped and narrow-shouldered, immobile head attached to the torso without much of a neck. Their skin varies in color from brown and tan to red or orange and is covered in fine white feathers in youth.
Upon reaching adulthood, Ha'tnu lose most of their feathering, retaining some on the tops of their heads. Males keep the soft fine feathers of youth while females grow longer, stiffer feathers in a crest running horizontally over their heads from ear hole to ear hole.
Ha'tnu facial features follow the general humanoid pattern, but with the mid-face protruding several inches out. A long nose hangs over the mouth and a they lack a strong chin.
Ha'tnu have four-fingered hands and feet, and generally don't wear shoes of any kind.
Young Ha'tnu all have strong agile tails, which are surgically removed upon reaching adulthood.
History
The Ha'tnu are an old civilization, with advanced technology in most areas excepting warp propulsion. While they developed warp drive over 12,000 years ago, according to some historians, they never achieved better than warp one, and never ventured beyond sending robotic probes to other stellar systems.
They did, however, colonize another planet and two moons in their own system around 12,000 years ago. Approximately 8,000 years ago,the colonies sought independence from their mother planet causing a great war that rendered the lunar colonies uninhabbitable.
The colonized planet did receive independence, but the colony was destroyed by the Romulans when the conquered the system.

For reproduction, Ha'tnu females generally lay one egg that is fertilized and protected by a male mate. Ha'tnu monogamy is ephemeral, lasting only from egg-laying to egg-hatching. No social constructs force or favor longer term mating relationships, although they occasionally do exist.
Females generally govern Ha'tnu society, although this has begun to change under Romulan domination. More Ha'tnu males are taking part in administrating the Romulan protectorate of Fvillhaih Arylne, and these males often wear prosthetic feather crests quite different in style from natural female ones.
This has caused a lot of tension in the subjugated Ha'tnu society. Many males have prospered under Romulan control and want greater participation in Romulan society, while females are often quite hostile to their Romulan masters.
